Lincoln, NE (September 24, 2020) – An accident reported on Monday evening in the Lincoln area claimed one man’s life and lead to the arrest of a second person. At approximately 10:30 p.m., on September 21, the Lincoln Police Department was requested at the site of an accident on Belmont Street.
Reports show that 29-year-old Hani Hadgi was driving a GMC Terrain through the intersection of Belmont Street and 12th Street. Hadgi drove off the road and struck the pedestrian, who was standing on the sidewalk near the intersection.
The pedestrian, who was identified as 41-year-old Victor Melendez II, was critically injured in the crash. A bystander began to administer CPR to the victim while awaiting the assistance of medical professionals.
Medical professionals transported Melendez to a hospital in Lincoln where he succumbed to his injuries.
Hadgi, who initially fled the scene of the accident, was later arrested for leaving the scene of an accident causing serious bodily injury or death. At this time, the incident remains under investigation.
